Starting in South Africa, we ducked cyber sharks and looked for a safe harbour to surf the internet without having someone looking over our shoulder. In Mauritius we decided to live the island life and imagine a world where dodgy folk weren’t spear-phishing our good times. Now, nine years later, it is time we part ways.

SumRando (Mauritius) Ltd has made the decision to discontinue its consumer VPN and chat application offerings. My team has always had your back and it has been an honour to safeguard your online presences as you went about your day-to-day. I am confident that the lessons we have learned together, prepared us to venture forth and stay safe and secure, to treat uncensored, private internet access as the human rights that .

As we approach Halloween, my favourite holiday, I want to give you notice and time to choose a new provider as your go-to VPN—someone you trust. SumRando will officially go dark on the 1st of October. While we could have partnered with a different provider, we have made the decision to allow you to research and choose your own provider. Your SumRando account information will cease to exist and, as you know, there are no traces to sweep up.

I know this is not welcome news, but I believe there are a handful of reputable providers who will also treat your privacy as paramount. There are others who, given the chance, will safeguard your online identities and prioritise integrity over profits.

With that, put on your cyber masks, be safe and live life like just Sum Rando.

Cheers,

Jonathan de Wolff
CEO, SumRando

*Note, if you are a Platinum user, we will be refunding transactions processed August 1st or later and terminating recurring payments. As the world watches country-wide protests and the failure in its response to the Covid-19 pandemic, we can't help but wonder if we are witnessing the end of the United States of America as we know it. We hope not. For all of its faults - its foreign policy, its systemic racism, its colonial legacy - America has been a beacon of hope for the world. The fabled "American Dream" is the dream of humanity.

Where would we be without the United States? Its contributions to science to medicine, to technology, to our very way of life, and yes, despite everything, to human rights, are such that the world would be a vastly different place, a boring place, a sick place, had it never existed.

We all dream of freedom. We all dream of equality. We all dream of home ownership, good schools for our children, good health, enough food to eat, love of family and friends, and physical and economic security to live life as we see fit. Alas, we don't live in that world. We live in one where exploitation is the norm, one where the wealthy and powerful use Fear of the Other to maintain control. What is racism? It is a learned evil. It spreads like a virus.

Black Lives Matter is part of the cure. What we are seeing from the protestors gives us hope, not only for the United States, but for the world. Dictators abound these days. While the Western world thought democracy had triumphed and the rest of us hoped to achieve said democracy, recent history has trended the other way. Trump, Putin, Bolsonaro, Nkurunziza, Sisi, Khamenei, Maduro, Orban, Modi, Duterte, Erdogen, Bin Salman, Xi Jinping, Johnson, Aliyev, Lourenco, Kim Jong-un, al-Maktoum, Biya, Deby, al-Khalifa...oh, this is exhausting. Can we stop this descent into global fascism, please?

Sumrando supports #BlackLivesMatter. Founded in a nation well-versed in the evils of racism, we seek to provide the tools global citizens need to protect their freedom. Our VPN, Messenger, and STASH apps provide the privacy, security, and anonymity you need, whether you are a protestor, a journalist, part of a marginalized group, or just an average citizen who wants to protect their rights, our apps are there for you. The best part? They are free! (Get them here)

Look, we'd love to not have to exist, but someone has to provide encryption apps to protect the oppressed from their oppressors. Until we achieve the dream of freedom for all, end systemic racism, and annihilate global exploitation, we will continue to provide these tools of protection. So go Black Lives Matter, go America! You can do this.

Here's to the future!
How we act in times of crises defines us.

The world has been brought to its knees. Too many people are using it for profit. Is crisis profiteering not the worst that humanity has to offer? Whether it be war or natural disasters or this awful disease, making money from human death is despicable. It doesn't matter if you are a legit business or a criminal enterprise, it is all the same evil.

Maybe worse than profiteering, though, is actively interfering with recovery efforts, like cyberattacks on hospitals, which has gotten so bad that the Red Cross had to beg governments to take action to clamp down on hackers.

Or what about being the chair of an organization that exists to promote computer science in schools and calling a security researcher a criminal because he brought to your attention a potentially devastating security flaw in your website, and you are also governor of a US state and your website is a pandemic unemployment assistance site and that security flaw exposes people's bank accounts? (Why hide the flaw if you aren't benefiting from it in some way?)

Uganda has used Covid as an excuse for further censorship it imposes under the guise of a social media tax. The tax undermines the fight against the disease.

And what of those who use this pandemic as an excuse to inflame ethnic hatreds and oppress those who are different than them, such as the Rohinga at refugee camps in Bangladesh or the people of Jammu and Kashmir? Internet shutdowns, especially in a time of crisis, endanger lives.

Then there are those using the pandemic as an excuse to surveil us and collect our data.
الصحة العامة واحترام الخصوصية: توصيات أكسس ناو فيما يتعلق بتطبيقات تتبع مُخالطي المرضى بفيروس الكورونا (كوفيد-19)

Let's do better, so we can all recover from this pandemic with some human dignity intact.
"I have nothing to hide."

It's a common refrain when people are confronted with questions about the security measures they take to protect themselves online, as if only criminals need to protect their online identities. You are far more likely to have your identity stolen than your house robbed, yet billions of dollars a year are spent on protecting homes from would be invaders while most people spend pennies on online safety. Indeed, the false sense of online security, the "I have nothing to hide" defense, is so prevalent that people voluntarily put surveillance devices made by large tech corporations into their homes, opening themselves up to hackers and cyberthieves.

A quick Google search on home invasions leads one to a host of misinformation about the threat of burglary, including one that claims one in five homes "encounter a violent home intrusion or burglary." We'll file that one under "extreme lying." You can scroll through pages and pages of articles written by home security companies trying to scare people into buying their products.

The reality is that 0.4% of Americans are victims of burglary, according to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Contrast that with the number of Americans who are victims of online theft. According to a 2018 report by NortonLifelock, there are 27 cybercrime victims every second and 117 million identity theft victims. That is more than one third of the population of the United States, which is twice the global average.

You don't need an expensive program to protect yourself online. VPN encryption can help hide your information from would be thieves. In fact, you can use SumRando VPN for free. Get 1 GB free per month or unlimited data starting at $6 US per month.
The Committee to Protect Journalists has published a safety kit for journalists to prepare for the elections. It guides journalists through such things as physical safety, basic device preparedness, identifying bots, dealing with online harassment and trolls, securing and storing materials (our specialty!), and psychological safety and dealing with trauma. These tips do not apply only to South Africa, but across the world.

Some highlights, and where we come in:

"Journalists should check the content in messaging applications, such as
WhatsApp. They should save and then delete any information that puts
them at risk. Media workers should be aware that WhatsApp backs up all
content to the cloud service linked to the account, for example iCloud
or Google Drive." Our advice: Don't use WhatsApp at all. Use SumRando Messenger. You can even destroy your messages on the receiver's phone, ensuring there is no trace of your message.

"Think about where you want to back up information. You will need to
decide whether it is safer to keep your materials in the cloud, on an
external hard drive or on a USB." Our advice: Store your info in SumRando Stash, a secure document storage app that requires a secure key and password to access and automatically deletes your documents after a certain number of days of your choosing.

"It is a good idea to encrypt any information that you back up. You can
do that by encrypting your external hard drive or USB. You can also turn
on encryption for your devices." Our advice: One thing they did not mention is using VPN encryption to secure your info and protect your privacy. You can download SumRando VPN for Windows or Android free or get the openVPN config to use with other systems with a subscription.
If you are not a journalist but want to help, purchasing a subscription to SumRando VPN helps us provide these free apps to journalists and activists across the globe.

We don't even know what is going on in Zimbabwe anymore. Is the internet on? All of it? None of it? Some of it? Is it off in some regions but not others?

We know not all of it is working, as many Zimbabweans have reached out to us and thanked us for providing them with a means to access their favorite websites.

A court ordered access be restored, but has it been? Will it be? Will the government ignore the court order? Will the government stop detaining people simply because they oppose the Mnangagwa regime?

Protests are no excuse to shutdown the internet, violence or not. There is never an excuse to shutdown the internet.

Let's call this shutdown what it is: a power grab by President Mnangagwa as he continues to push Zimbabwe towards authoritarianism.

We're here for you, Zimbabwe, whatever happens. Get your free VPN download here, and unblock those websites.

For those of you outside of Zimbabwe, help us help them get the internet freedom they deserve. A subscription helps us keep offering free VPN to those who need it most.

Freedom House has released its annual "Freedom on the Net" report, and the results were not encouraging. What it found was a rise in what it calls "digital authoritarianism," a trend in line with the general drift towards authoritarianism across the globe.

Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro, who took office in the world's fourth largest democracy today, is the latest in a line of "elected" leaders with autocratic tendencies that include those from some of the world's formerly greatest champions of democracy. Nearly all of these electoral campaigns have included the use of social media to spread propaganda and hatred. He has, after only hours in office, targeted minorities and is purging government contractors who don't share his far right extremist ideology. It will only get worse.

Bolsonaro used WhatsApp extensively during the campaign. A study of 100,000 WhatsApp messages paid for by the Bolsonaro campaign showed that more than half were lies. No matter the country, the deceptive messages are the same. Demonize your opponents. Blame the left for the world's problems. Equate minorities with terrorism. Use religion as a prop. Bolsonaro did all of this. He even accused George Soros of trying to interfere in the campaign, a favorite dog whistle of the American and European far right.

Autocrats have various measures to repress internet freedom. They use "fake news" as an excuse to curb internet freedom and silence their opponents. Sometimes they even jail their critics under this ruse. Egypt, always creative when it comes to new ways to oppress its citizens, passed a law over the summer that requires all social media users with over 5000 followers to obtain a media license. (It should be noted here that Egypt has the third highest number of journalists in prison.) Forcing websites to register with the government has become commonplace in oppressive countries, too.

Meanwhile, government accountability, an independent judiciary, freedom of the press, internet freedom, and the right to collective bargaining, hallmarks of democracy and human rights, are all under attack in democracies everywhere.

Autocrats across the globe have succeeded in scapegoating minorities, immigrants and refugees, leftists, workers parties and trade unions, journalists, atheists, feminists, LGBT, Jews and Muslims, and "the elite" (an attack on intellectuals and entertainers while conveniently excluding corporate executives), for deteriorating living standards that are, in fact, the result of neoliberal policies. Somehow, the world has eaten it up.

George Satayana once said, "Those who forget the past are condemned to repeat it." The world nearly destroyed itself not even a century ago, yet here we are, facing the same dangers that brought human civilization to its knees to face the proverbial firing squad.

Here are ten ways to fight creeping fascism:

1. Read a history book. Read many, from the classics to modernity. Learn from the mistakes of history, which repeats itself over and over and over again because people don't learn about the past.

2. When finished reading those books, lend them to your friends and family, so they, too, may educate themselves.

3. Learn how to spot propaganda. Fake news is one kind of propaganda. Slogans, flags, and political rallies are also propaganda. Be wary of state or party sponsored television channels such as RT, PressTV, or Fox that report "news" that benefits one side only or demonizes the opposition. If an article or news report demonizes an entire group of people, it's propaganda.

4. Say no to belief in conspiracy theories. Social media has given rise to a whole new level of insanity when it comes to what people will believe.

5. Recognize that the threat of fascism is real. Too often, people say, "it can't happen here." It can. It does. It is, in Brazil, in Turkey, in the United States and Hungary and Philippines and Poland and India and across the whole world.

6. Vote if you can, but be informed. Ignore candidates who dehumanize others, use racism or bigotry to stoke fears, or talk about overriding constitutional laws that they don't like. These kind of social issues are a mask for policies that benefit the candidates and their friends, not the country. It's propaganda. Don't fall for it.

7. Don't be afraid. Standing up for what is right takes courage, effort, and sacrifice.

8. Trust journalists. The reason autocrats demonize journalists is that they are the gatekeepers of truth. They report reality. But you also have to be able to tell the difference between a journalist, an opinion columnist, and a talking head who is hired to say the news on air but has no real journalistic background.

9. Follow fact-checking organizations or projects to combat fake news like "Fato or Fake" or Comprova, two Brazilian groups consisting of people with the training and backgrounds to vet news stories, investigate claims, and set the record straight. Beware of fake fact-checking groups and fake election monitoring groups.

10. Be smart online. Use SumRando VPN and Messenger for online anonymity so no one can see what you do online. We live in dangerous times. Spying on people is big business. Governments with bad intentions can see what you say and who you say it to. VPN encryption provides a layer of protection against prying eyes, and our secure messenger app makes your communication secret. It even allows you to set self-destruct messages and destroy the messages you sent to other phones.
We have been thinking about the American phenomenon of Elf on a Shelf, a recently established American Christmas tradition of placing a toy elf around one's house so that children think an elf is watching them and reporting their behavior to Santa Claus.

It's a pretty disturbing trend if you really think about it. I mean, is the North Pole a surveillance state or what? Is Santa a dictator?

We're making a list of Santa's transgressions and checking it twice:

He watches your every move.
He uses indentured servants to make his products.
He has minions to spy on you in your home (Elf on a Shelf!)
Citizens of the North Pole don't get to vote.
He's ruled the North Pole for...well, forever, we guess.
He punishes you if he doesn't like his behavior.

We'll tell you this: we don't want some elf watching everything we do. Fortunately, no elf is going to be able to watch our online behavior because we are using SumRando VPN. Even Santa himself can't crack its encryption.

Privacy is a human right, Santa. Don't put us on your naughty list because we are helping people execute their human rights in countries where dictators surveil their citizens and block information or lines of communication from them. Why not prove you are the nice guy everyone thinks you are and give some subscriptions to SumRando VPN for Christmas?

You'd think they'd be headlines.

Russia shuts down Telegram

Cameroon blocks the internet from English speaking population

India cuts access to the internet for 177th time in five years

But they aren't. Oh sure, sometimes a major world newspaper like the New York Times mentions them. But are they discussed by the shouting heads on Western cable news channels? The American CNN seems to talk of nothing but the tweets of their president. The BBC is not much better about its own political Yoricks. In many African countries, they aren't allowed to talk about these things at all, and in others, the political soap operas dominate the conversation.

Yet, the entire world is facing a sort of existential crisis when it comes to the very freedoms we all agreed human beings should have when we joined the United Nations. Granted, the internet was not invented when the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was signed, but then again, most people in the world did not even have televisions and we seemed to figure out that television was a part of free speech and such. We use the term "internet shutdown," but that is a generic term that encompasses many actions. A shutdown can range from blocking a single website or app to creating an alternate country- or region-wide intranet to cutting off access to the entire internet. We should add to that the issue of net neutrality, a sort of "evolved" version of an internet shutdown that makes it seem like it's all in the name of "business" or "jobs" but it's really just another means to control information and political power. It's all the more dangerous when telecommunications are controlled by only a few corporations with a large dollar stake in who is in power in a government.

Let's be real. An internet shutdown is censorship, no matter what form it takes.

And here we are, a small company from Africa, shouting into the darkness, with little name recognition and limited resources to do something about it compared to the Microsofts and Googles of the world. We do what we can.

The large, well-funded American organizations who fight for causes like ours have recently been busy with their own declining internet freedoms and creeping authoritarianism. They are getting a taste of the poison we have been dealing with in large doses since the internet started to spread in the
"developing countries." The EU countries are trying to figure out just what GDPR is and if it goes too far or not far enough in privacy protection. Those Western countries we looked to as ideals for freedom of speech and press are fighting the same authoritarian impulses that Africans have known since before they were born.

What has the internet done to us all?

Do you ever wonder if people ran around at the time of Gutenberg acting all crazy like this?

So what we are doing here is providing some tools to fight censorship and trying to call attention to the missing headlines. These tools are open to the whole world, but we focus our attention on countries where oppression is severe and where people may not be able to afford a VPN subscription. When we're blocked by a country, we find solutions to make it work for the people there. We have millions of users across the globe, but especially in regions like the Middle East and Africa where censorship is normal.

Yesterday, these people went to work in the morning. They never came home.

They are the 30th, 31st, 32nd, 33rd, and 34th journalists and media workers killed this year in the line of duty. Telling the truth is a deadly job, with more than 1300 journalists losing their lives since 1992. This time seems a little different, though. While people in the many parts of the world are sadly used to hearing about the deaths of journalists, these five people were sitting in a newsroom in the United States of America.

We can argue about the merits and hypocrisies of U.S. foreign policy all day long, but one thing that the world has never had to question was the commitment of the U.S. to the principles of press freedom. Just three days after the current U.S. president used authoritarian language in calling journalists "enemies of the people," a man shot up a newsroom. Americans of a certain political persuasion wear t-shirts that call for the murder of journalists. Rightwing personalities actively have called for vigilantes to gun down those who have dedicated their lives to the pursuit of truth.

The world weeps for you, America.

Here at SumRando Cybersecurity, we are committed to do our small part in protecting journalists from the sociopaths who would do them harm. While we can't provide physical security, we offer encryption tools to help protect their identities and information online. SumRando Messenger is a secure messaging app that also gives you the ability to destroy your messages forever, even on the phone of the person you sent it to. SumRando STASH is a secure file transfer service where you can exchange documents anonymously. SumRando VPN protects your online privacy and security. We currently offer journalists a year of unlimited VPN data for $20.18, nearly $50 off the regular price.

Finally! After four years of waiting, it's time for the World Cup! It's a time to wave your flags, shout until you have no voice, and maybe skip out of work. There's nothing like it in the world, this global celebration of sport, when half the world tunes in to watch with friends and family and cheer on the best players in the universe.

Unfortunately, for some people, it isn't all fun and games. For LGBT fans, it can be downright dangerous, especially in Russia.

The St. Petersburg based LGBT group Coming Out has set up a hotline for LGBT football fans visiting Russia in response to the oppressive environment created by the Putin regime - including recent discriminatory legislation - and threats from homophobic football gangs roaming the country. Violence against LGBT in Russia is not uncommon.

We invite LGBT football fans in Russia to use SumRando Messenger to communicate safely and privately during the World Cup. Our end to end encryption is top notch and is under the Russian radar, unlike some of the more trendy messenger apps. (For example, the Russian regime has given thumbs up to hacking WhatsApp and Skype as part of its plan to monitor all internet traffic in the country.) Even better, SumRando Messenger gives you the ability to destroy your messages forever, even if they are on the other person's phone. Leave no trace of your communications. Leave no "evidence" for oppressive governments to exploit should you be arrested for simply being you.

SumRando Cybersecurity is a proud supporter of LGBT rights. Time moves forward, not backwards. It's time for humanity to move forward as well. Until then, we'll continue to provide the tools to keep LGBT and any oppressed group safe from the hateful wrath of oppression.

This tweet struck us yesterday as the perfect microcosmic example of the consequences of internet shutdowns.

India is by the worst culprit in shutting down the internet, with 177 known shutdowns since 2012. African countries are doing their best to compete, with Cameroon, Ethiopia, and Chad among the guiltiest parties.

Internet shutdowns cost countries $2.4 billion USD in 2016. That's a lot of supplies not delivered, a lot of orders not taken, a lot of bills unpaid, a lot of products unused.
While a VPN can't help you when an ISP or a government completely turns off internet access, it can help when only certain websites and apps are blocked. Why not take advantage of our limited time offer of one year of unlimited VPN data for $20.18 USD?

There's a story by the Russian author Fyodor Sologub called The Petty Demon about a vindictive, paranoid man and a vindictive, paranoid town. The main character, Peredonov, is obsessed with achieving material success, no matter whose life he has to destroy to get there. About Peredonov, Sologub writes, "He didn’t like people, he never thought about them other than in
connection with what benefits or pleasures he might derive from them." His hostile treatment of others is a reflection of his egoism, a trait that has emerged in our modern world's obsession with materialism.

Peredonov's obsessions lead to paranoia, and he begins to see a little demon everywhere. In one scene, he cuts out the eyes of the royals in a deck of cards because he thinks they are looking at him. Everyone is out to get him and prevent him from obtaining the object of his desire - a position as school inspector, which would come with wealth and power. (SPOILER ALERT: It doesn't end well for him.)

Is this not an accurate description of Vladimir Putin?

Putin's recent ban on the messenger app Telegram is just the latest in a long list of assaults on online freedom and freedom of expression. As recently as 2014, Russia was ranked "partly free" on Freedom House's annual Freedom on the Net report. Since 2015, it has been ranked "not free."

This devolution has come as more Russians gain access to the internet. In 2004, only 8% of Russians had access. As of December 2015, 70% had access. Powermongering, paranoid Putin won't let Russians have access to the real internet because people might be able to spread information about protests and ways to elect opposition leaders like Alexei Navalny. Democracy and freedom are Putin's petty demons.

But - Russians can bypass Putin's censorship with SumRando encryption tools. Replace your Telegram account with SumRando Messenger. Download SumRando VPN for Windows and Android to access blocked websites. Visit www.sumrando.com for more information.
Last week, an article was published regarding VPNs and Proxies
and potential vulnerabilities with WebRTC. We felt the article
was somewhat misleading, and we want to take the opportunity to
clarify what this all means and how it impacts you as a user of
SumRando's products and services.

What is WebRTC?
WebRTC is an HTML5 specification that allows for real-time
communication between browsers and devices without plugins or
other widgets installed. It enables voice and video communication
to work inside web pages. Many popular browsers (think FireFox
and Chrome) already have WebRTC enabled.

What is a Web Proxy?
A web proxy server is a computer that sits between you and the
internet, which reroutes your requests through our servers by way
of the website on the browser. When you are using a web proxy,
Internet traffic on that page is routed through the proxy server,
making it look as if it came from the server's IP address instead
of yours. This is isolated to only the webpage you are using, not
the entire browser.

What is a VPN?
VPN stands for virtual private network. VPNs provide a virtual
version of a secure physical network, where the information you
send over the Internet is encrypted and secured from others on the
Internet. By running a VPN, an encrypted tunnel is established
between your device and the VPN servers. Once the connection is
established, all of your Internet activity (from browser to Skype
to email) is pushed through this secure tunnel, through the VPN
servers, and out to the Internet. The video on our VPN page - https://www.sumrando.com/vpn.aspx
- explains the process as well.

Great. Why are you telling me all this?
The article that was originally published last week and has since
circulated in the community indicated that some privacy services
(VPNs and Proxies) may be vulnerable to WebRTC leaks. SumRando
Web Proxy was identified on that list.

Was my IP leaked when I used SumRando VPN?
No. SumRando is designed to encrypt ALL traffic including WebRTC
offering you the most anonymity and security possible when using a
VPN service.

Was my IP leaked when I used SumRando Web Proxy?
Potentially, depending on the website(s) you visited. SumRando Web
Proxy was released with the intention of circumventing geolocation
blocking and for quick anonymous searches on the web. It was not
designed to serve as a complete privacy and security solution.
(That's why we encourage you to download and use SumRando VPN).
Admittedly, we weren't clear on our website how the browser plays
a big role in network communication and the risks related to
WebRTC and other non-HTTP and HTTPS web traffic.

I used SumRando Web Proxy. Can you tell me if I was specifically
impacted by the leak?
No. SumRando does not track SumRando Web Proxy activity. We have
no insight into who visited what sites at any certain time.

Okay. Now what?
We highly recommend that you download and use SumRando VPN - https://www.sumrando.com/download.aspx.
We have a free account option that provides you with 1GB of data
per month. If you need more, you can easily upgrade to SumRando
VPN Platinum, which gives you unlimited data and access to all of
our VPN servers around the world.

SumRando Web Proxy is temporarily unavailable while we work to
determine is there are additional ways to reduce the impact of
WebRTC. If you are concerned with WebRTC, it is possible to
disable it directly in your browsers - https://www.privacyend.com/disable-webrtc-in-various-browsers/.
This may degrade some performance of websites, but it will prevent
other websites from obtaining more inforamation under the guise of
WebRTC requests.

As always, if you have any feedback, questions, or concerns,
please reach out to us at support@sumrando.com.

Happy St. Paddy's Day to all the Irish out there and to those non-Irish who just want a reason to drink Guinness.

The Irish may be the largest diaspora in the world. Some 80 million people worldwide claim Irish heritage; this, from a country whose peak population reached 8 million. Even those not so well-versed in history know that oppression sent millions to emigrate or to their deaths. Poverty was a major struggle up until the Celtic Tiger in the 1990s, after decades of European Union structural funds propelled the economy to the top tier. It was an opportune time, as a fledgling tech industry would soon grow into a major global force. Many of the biggest tech companies in the world now have headquarters in Dublin; they have rebuilt the docklands - a once dirty old town of warehouses and factories - into a glittering, glass and steel mini city known as the Silicon Docks. If you've ever been to Dublin, you'd marvel at the changes over the last twenty years. It's a whole new world.

One reason the tech companies flocked to Dublin was its weak privacy laws. Data drinking companies like Google and Facebook were able to build massive data empires in part because these laws made privacy virtually an afterthought. Ireland's Data Protection Commissioner has been repeatedly challenged in courts by the European Union, and a new EU privacy law may open the floodgates for more litigation.

The EU's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) will restrict how tech companies collect, store, and use personal data beginning 25 May 2018. Businesses and organizations that fail to comply with GDPR will be fined 20 million euro or 4% of their global annual revenue, whichever is higher.

The Irish government is trying to make the state exempt from provisions of the GDPR. A massive 132 page bill is still under debate with some rather bizarre points, such as reducing the age of consent from 16 to 13! Irish data protection experts are universally opposed to the bill, which they say, "has the potential to kill data protection enforcement in Ireland and will take years of litigation to fix.”

So why is Ireland opposed to data protection? For one, most businesses in Ireland are not prepared for the GDPR changes. Then there is the government itself that feels it is not prepared and worries that any fines on its public bodies may drain the budget and prevent them from fixing the problems that led to the fines in the first place.

These issues will be discussed in April at the Dublin Data Sec 2018 conference. Let's hope Ireland can get the bill sorted out before the GDPR deadline. In the meantime, here's to all the Irish out there.

Sláinte!
